"I love you, but I gotta let go... xo."
These lyrics have become the soundtrack to my life lately... thanks to this month's Local Artist in Residence at Nashville's Alt 98.3, Nightly.
If you've heard the amazingness that is "XO," then you know what the fuss is about. If you have yet to hear Nightly's debut single, then do it now. Do not wait on this one. I repeat... do not wait!
After having also seen their live show this week, I can promise you Nightly has so much more where "XO" came from. Not only do they have other repeat-worthy tracks up their sleeves, like the incredible "Sleeptalker," but to be a new band, they also have an impressive stage presence rivaling bands who have been on the road for years.
I wish there was a way to list Nightly as an "Artist to Watch" x 1000, because I really believe in these guys. Trust the buzz. Nightly is your new favorite band.
The Reel Spin: You guys are a bit of a mystery, so tell us a little bit about yourselves... like how Nightly came to be and any other juicy tidbits we need to know...
Jonathan Capeci: Joey [Beretta] and I are cousins. We’ve been making music together off and on since we were 11. We wrote a couple songs this past winter that felt really unique and special, so we decided to start a band. It’s been really fun so far.
TRS: For those that haven't yet heard your music, how would you describe your sound?
Capeci: The easy answer is alt pop... who really knows what that means? We tried to take the things we were good at and build on those, rather than try to be genre specific.
TRS: I'm in love with your single, "XO" -- it is such a killer track! Not only is it so infectious that I have to keep it on repeat, but I can really relate to the lyrics... loving someone but needing to let go. So, I'm really curious... can you tell us the story behind the song? Every song has a story...
Capeci: Thank you! That means a lot. Honestly, we try to be really authentic when it comes to writing. We like to write from a real experience or feeling. That song is about being in a relationship that you aren’t 100% convinced is a good idea, you know? Doesn’t mean they’re a bad person, just that the two of you together isn’t for the best. But that conversation sucks.
TRS: I have high hopes that big things are just around the corner for you guys... If you could go on tour with any artist of any genre... who would it be and why?
Capeci: Dude, that’s such a hard question. There are so many sick bands we’d love to tour with, but I feel like you have to go with someone legendary right? Like U2 or The Killers or something?
TRS: What's next for Nightly? Any chance there will be more new music or an EP soon? I think I can speak for everyone when I say we need more Nightly in our lives!
Capeci: [Laughs] Thank you! There will be new content over the next few months... videos, pictures, shows and eventually music. We’re really just enjoying the whole thing. Probably the best way to stay in touch is by signing up for our email list at thisisnightly.com.
