The Royals definitely knows how to keep things interesting... this season, particularly so. Characters come and go on The Royals, so it's sometimes best not to get too attached to any one person, because you never know how long they will be sticking around; however, one character it's been hard not to get attached to is that of Beck, portrayed by the gorgeous and talented Andrew Cooper.
Each time he graces the screen, Cooper brings such an authenticity and sincerity to Beck, it's hard not to fall more and more in love with him and wish he could stick around a little while longer. So, since fans are currently left wondering when Beck will once again make what will no doubt be a swoon-worthy appearance, I thought now would be the perfect time to get to know the man behind this incredible character.
The Reel Spin: So first off... let's talk The Royals... what has it been like being part of a show that is so beloved by fans?
Andrew Cooper: The show is a lot of fun to work on, and Mark [Schwahn] has done a great job with it. It's such a dynamic show with great layers in terms of characters and the storyline... it's bold, and full of twists and passion.
TRS: How would you describe your character, Beck?
Cooper: Beck, or should I say Lord Twysden Beckwith, is Princess Eleanor's first love and best friend to the deceased Prince Robert. He has a close family bond going back to being kids with Robert, Liam and Eleanor. What's great, though, is that there is also a lot of mystery as to who he really is, which is fun to play with. Ultimately, he really cares for Eleanor and wants the best for her, but he also has his own issues in season 2 with the split from his wife.
TRS: One of the things I really love about Beck is that he truly believes in Eleanor and tries to encourage her to be the best version of herself, but with all the loss she's suffered, she's not really ready to be that version of herself yet is she?
Cooper: That's right... he truly cares for her, and I think he has always had the upper hand in their relationship and been the guiding figure. In the second series I think he realizes that she is dealing with a lot, and it's tough for him to realize that he doesn't have the answers. It will be interesting to see how the next stages work in this relationship and whether it will ultimately work out.
TRS: The timing always seems to be a bit off for Eleanor and Beck, but yet it's obvious there is a deep connection between the two of them. Do you think there's a chance one day the two of them could get the timing right?
Cooper: I think that Beck offers something different than Jasper, and he is a better fit for a princess with his family status. Right now though I think he needs to deal with his own baggage and find some fun in his life... The timing is bad, and he needs to deal with his own mess. I would like to see him come back a bit more rock and roll and guns blazing…or maybe disheveled, and she can be the one saving him or getting into trouble together.
TRS: Do you think he was ever threatened by Eleanor's past relationship with Jasper?
Cooper: He definitely is suspicious of Jasper. I don't think he is the jealous type right now, but who knows. Beck and Jasper are actually very similar in the sense that they love her and are watching over her and trying to protect her in different ways.
TRS: The only downside to portraying such a genuinely sincere character like Beck is that you do not get to be involved in all of the devious plots going on in the palace. Ever secretly wish Beck would be a little more conniving?
Cooper: 100% ... I'm still not convinced Robert is dead, and maybe there is something in the background with Beck. I would love to see him come back in series 3 with a bang. Maybe he has gone on a binge and is miserable or he has a new girl to make her jealous. Who knows... but for sure I would love to see him come back and fight for her.
TRS: Fans of the show know what an amazing actor you are, but they may not know you recently wrote a book entitled Juiceman. How did that come to be, and what can you tell us about it?
Cooper: This is an extension of this cold pressed juice company I started in the UK. It all comes from my love for healthy food and drink. The book is a way to share all the recipes I have developed over years traveling around the world. LA is a massive inspiration for the book and the business. Good nutrition is the answer to good health. I'm very creative and enjoy a challenge so the book was a fun outlet to do something different and share my passion for juice. It's actually a big thing me and Alex [Park] have in common. I would always be bringing in juices for her and the rest of the cast from my cold pressed juice company, Juiceman.
