With the release of her impressive self-titled debut EP and joining Brad Paisley and Justin Moore on tour, Mickey Guyton is having quite the year. I had the chance to ask Guyton about her experience thus far on the "Crushin' It" tour, what the writing process is like for her, and what's next for this talented star on the rise.
The Reel Spin: You're currently touring with Brad Paisley and Justin Moore on the "Crushin' It" tour this summer... can you put into words what the experience has been like so far?
Mickey Guyton: Being on Brad Paisley’s CRUSHIN’ IT tour has been an experience of a lifetime! To be able to be on a major tour is a blessing! Brad is incredibly gracious, and I am so grateful to be a part of his tour and to be able to sing with him every night on “Whiskey Lullaby.” Everyone on his crew, his dad and right hand man are so nice and you can tell everyone is really happy. I hope I can be just like him if I ever get my own major tour.
TRS: "Better Than You Left Me" is a song that I think anyone who has experienced a bad break-up can relate to and find strength in. I would imagine the song has helped many of your fans feel a sense of empowerment coming out of their own relationship experiences... have you found this to be true?
Guyton: Every day that I look at my Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or even meet fans after a concert - I get someone that comes up to me and tells me how my song is helping them. It makes me sad that they are hurting but happy that I can help them through it. Bonnie Raitt, Carrie Underwood, and Beyoncé did that for me when I went through my break-up.
TRS: Is writing a cathartic experience for you? Do you find that the best songs come from personal experiences?
Guyton: Yes, writing is therapeutic for me. Even if it is a song that I didn't write as long as I can relate to it, I can sing it. I didn't write “Why Baby Why” but when I heard it, I had an instant connection to it.
TRS: Let's talk about the new EP... I'm in love with "Why Baby Why" -- Do you have a favorite song on the EP? Are you excited for fans to hear the new songs?
Guyton: “Why Baby Why” is definitely one of my favorites. I love singing it, and it really hits home for me.
TRS: You've signed with Capitol Records Nashville, you've performed at the White House and at The Grand Ole Opry, and now you're on tour with Brad Paisley... what's next for Mickey Guyton?
Guyton: Releasing my debut album is next! I am so looking forward to sharing the rest of my music!
