A stand-up comedian and actress, Sarah Colonna might best be known for her work on Chelsea Lately and After Lately, but she is also a best selling author. Her new book, Has Anyone Seen My Pants?, offers an undeniably hilarious and honest look at life in her late thirties and takes readers with her everywhere from mother-daughter road trips to single-shaming resorts. You'll laugh, you'll cry, but one thing you won't be is sorry you went along for the ride.
The Reel Spin: One of the things I love most about Has Anyone Seen My Pants? is the honesty of your storytelling. Did you find writing the book to be a cathartic experience?
Sarah Colonna: I definitely did. Getting some of those stories out of my head and onto paper (well, computer) really made me feel normal again. Especially the tougher stories, the ones that weren't exactly a laugh a minute. One story in particular, about a point in my life when I was pretty depressed, I don't think I even realized what I had been going through until I wrote it down. So to just put it out there was pretty healing.
TRS: I know for me personally, some of your experiences with dating mirrored some of my own experiences, which I loved, because it made me feel like someone else understands this crazy thing we call dating today. Have you had a lot of people tell you the same thing?
Colonna: I have! And honestly it's my favorite thing to hear (so thank you!). For me, a huge motivation for writing these stories was that I feel like a lot of people go through the same thing, and they feel alone. So if I could get someone to feel a little more normal by telling them my story, then I've done something good.
TRS: Do you have any additional road trips with your mom scheduled? And please promise to write about them if you do!
Colonna: I don't right now, but I definitely plan to! Who knew she'd turn out to be such a good road trip partner?!
TRS: Does your fiancé Jon Ryan mind sharing you with all of your fans? Has he gotten used to the idea that parts of his life with you have the possibility to end up in a book or as part of your stand-up?
Colonna: He's been really awesome and supportive. I have to share him with his fans, too, so we even out [Laughs]. And I know it isn't always easy to be with someone who talks so openly about their life, especially on stage. But he has an amazing sense of humor, plus he's an incredibly secure person - that part is key. I asked him if he would be okay with it before I wrote about us dating in the book, and he was basically like "why would I mind? It's a great story."
TRS: What's next for Sarah Colonna... and will there be pants involved?
Colonna: I'm doing a ton of stand-up dates and working on a couple ideas for TV shows I'd love to develop. I don't know if I'll ever really find my pants, though.
