Whether she's doing the impossible to save a life when others wouldn't dare try or mourning the loss of her beloved brother, Grey's Anatomy's 'Dr. Amelia Shepherd' is a character fans root for, cry with, and can't wait to see more of each week. This is due in large part to Caterina Scorsone's incredibly fearless and emotionally honest portrayal.
I had the chance to ask Caterina a few questions about her character's strength despite all the loss she has suffered, 'Amelia's' connection with 'Owen,' and that amazing superhero pose from earlier in the season.
The Reel Spin: 'Amelia' has been through so much... suffered so much loss... yet she always exudes a certain strength. Is that something that you intentionally try to bring to the character?
Caterina Scorsone: The writers are incredibly gifted. Showing 'Amelia's' strength and resilience in the face of all of the challenges she's met is very important to me. But the writers make it easy for me to draw it out. They seem to have a great understanding of the beauty and tenacity of someone who has battled with addiction and is treading the path of sobriety.
TRS: ‘Owen' (Kevin McKidd) happened to be there when she listened to the voicemail, just like he was also there to support 'Amelia' during her weakest moment after 'Derek's death. Watching the relationship between 'Amelia' and 'Owen' evolve this season has been really beautiful, and at times, heartbreaking. What do you think it is about their relationship that allows them to show their vulnerabilities to one another?
Scorsone: I think 'Owen' and 'Amelia' seem to recognize themselves in one another. They've both suffered tremendously in life and yet have devoted themselves toward helping others. They take their minds off of their own pain by healing the people they can heal. I think they see the strength in one another and also the tremendous courage it takes to keep fighting for life when one has encountered death so closely. I think they quietly admire one another. 'Amelia' feels less judged and more like herself with him than she has in a long time.
TRS: We have to talk about that superhero pose earlier in the season... it was so inspiring! Do you have fans stopping you on the street to tell you they've started doing it before important events as well?
Scorsone: A lot of people have reached out and thanked us for that superhero pose scene. I'm so happy that so many people, especially ladies, are using it! There's a great TED talk about the effectiveness of power poses. It's such a simple technology and it can make a big difference to performance.
TRS: If you could write 'Amelia's' storyline next season... what direction would you like to see the character go in?
Scorsone: I'd love to see her have a little more joy this season. She has had to deal with so much heaviness and tragedy this year. I'd love to see her heart get a little reprieve. She has a wicked sense of humor, and I'd love to see her laugh a little more this season.
TRS: Grey’s Anatomy has an amazing ensemble cast... is there anyone on the show you haven't yet had the opportunity to share a storyline with that you would like to?
Scorsone: Gosh, I love everyone in our cast so, I'd be happy playing with anyone they let me play with. I haven't had much with Camilla [Luddington] or Justin [Chambers], and I haven't worked with Jesse [Williams] much. And of course my sorta sister Kelly [McCreary]. But I also love all the people I have gotten to work with this year. I guess I'm just a pretty lucky girl in Shondaland. Can't go wrong.
