So many great things can be said about NBC's "Parenthood." The writing is unique and interesting, the topics are current, and the cast is stellar.
Since I come from a casting background, I can say with authority that when an actress like Lauren Graham is being underused, you know this cast must be one hell of an ensemble, and it is... Peter Krause, Monica Potter, Dax Shepard (who always manages to be equal parts funny and sincere)... and of course, the great Craig T. Nelson, just to name a few.
But, what about the unsung heroes... those actors with recurring and guest star roles? In recent weeks alone, "Parenthood" has graced us with the likes of Jason Ritter, Jonathan Tucker, Courtney Ford, D.B. Woodside, Rosa Salazar, and the band Dawes. Yep, I said Dawes. They even have the edge on the music front by casting a band that is on the brink of blowing up. The same can be true for the other actors mentioned as well, particularly Rosa Salazar and Courtney Ford, both of which have been turning in amazing performances as 'Zoe' and 'Lily' respectively.
So, as easy as it would be to slack a little on the recurring and guest star roles, that's just not the way "Parenthood" does it. Every role is handled with care and treated as though there is no such thing as a small role. Each and every character matters. As a result, we are given a top notch cast from beginning to end each week. It is a joy to see, and a real treat for fans. If only all shows would follow their lead...
